The “Road”: I finally had an annual physical early in 2013 (I hadn’t had a physical or blood work done for about 10-years! MEN, IF YOU ARE OVER 50, GET YOUR PSA CHECKED ANNUALLY – SO YOU DON’T END UP IN THE SAME BOAT AS I) and found out that my PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) was 57! I was 56 last year, and for a male my age, a PSA higher than 4.2 indicates probable prostate cancer in most cases – so mine was “Sky High!” A 12-core biopsy of my prostate revealed that ALL 12 cores were 90%-95% full of cancer! On August 19, 2013, Dr. Al Borhan performed a Da Vinci Robotic Radical Prostatectomy removing my prostate and surrounding tissues.
Post-surgery pathology revealed that the cancer had spread outside the prostate into surrounding tissues and in 2-of-10 Lymphnoeds removed during surgery. So we have to go after the remaining cancer aggressively to attempt to kill all the cancer.
Some Good News is that 6-weeks after having my prostatectomy, my PSA dropped from 57 down to 1! Praise Jesus! But since I no longer have a prostate, it should be zero, or at least below 0.1 (below 0.1 means no cancer is detectable).
On October 15, 2013, I began Lupron Hormone Therapy – one shot every 6-months for 18-months. Lupron blocks the production of Testosterone, prostate cancer feeds on Testosterone, thus by removing Testosterone you starve the prostate cancer. Man, the “hot flashes” though that accompany hormone therapy are miserable! About every 30-minutes here comes another hot flash! Oh, one other side-effect of the hormone therapy is that I now wear high-heels and carry a purse! JUST JOKING! I don’t really carry a purse!
30-days after beginning the hormone therapy, my PSA dropped from 1.0 down to 0.7! Thank You Jesus! 6-weeks later on December 30, 2013, my PSA had dropped to 0.2! Glory to God! I just had my PSA done on Friday, January 24, 2014, and it’s down to 0.1! Thank You, thank You, thank You Jesus!
However, even though Lupron hormone therapy is an effective tool against prostate cancer, it is not enough to completely kill all the cancer cells. Therefore, on Monday of this week, January 27, I began my Radiation therapy. This is it folks – this is the last tool in the toolbelt that can kill every single cancer cell – so thank you for joining your Faith with mine in believing for my complete, total and permanent healing in Jesus Name!
